Le commencement des « vĂ©rifs », câest un peu comme le dĂ©but du rallye. Câest lâheure des retrouvailles entre vieux copains, de lâexamen mutuel des vĂ©hicules, des paris sur les chances des uns et des autres. Bref, sur le site du centre culturel de Belem, ça sent dĂ©jĂ un peu le bivouac. Pour cette premiĂšre journĂ©e de vĂ©rifications, plus de 250 concurrents Ă©taient convoquĂ©s.
Le dĂ©filĂ© du jour, qui a dĂ©butĂ© comme lâexige la tradition avec un retard consĂ©quent, a permis de prendre la mesure du succĂšs du rallye au Portugal. Pays dâaccueil du Dakar pour la premiĂšre fois de son histoire, le Portugal nâa jamais prĂ©sentĂ© autant de concurrents. Avec 6 motos, 1 quad, 19 voitures et 1 camion, ils seront au total 48 concurrents Ă sâĂ©lancer de Lisbonne, nouvelle marque de rĂ©fĂ©rence.
Si lâexpĂ©rience portugaise sur le Dakar nâautorise guĂšre que Carlos Sousa (NIS â n°311) Ă prĂ©tendre aux premiers rĂŽles, câest dans la catĂ©gorie moto que quelques prĂ©tendants Ă la victoire se sont dĂ©jĂ prononcĂ©s. Jordi Arcarons, team manager de la branche espagnole de KTM, a clairement identifiĂ© Marc Coma, 2Ăšme en 2005, comme le grand espoir de lâĂ©quipe pour succĂ©der Ă Cyril Despres, surtout aprĂšs le forfait pour blessure de Jordi Duran : « La course est bien sĂ»r ouverte pour chacun de nos pilotes, mais nous parions sur Marc Coma et Carlo de Gavardo. Giovanni Sala intervient plus comme un pilote qui peut se sacrifier pour ses coĂ©quipiers ». Du cĂŽtĂ© de lâintĂ©ressĂ©, qui prĂ©fĂšre manifestement se prĂ©senter en outsider, on la joue beaucoup plus modeste : « câest Jordi qui dit que je suis favori, moi je dis juste que jâattends avec impatience que la course commence ». Quoi quâil en soit, les pilotes des motos oranges ont dĂ©jĂ pris un peu de retard sur le planning, puisquâils ont demandĂ© Ă effectuer les vĂ©rifs techniques demain, le temps dâeffectuer de derniers rĂ©glages.
Toujours discret, le NorvĂ©gien Pal-Anders Ullevalseter, qui est rĂ©guliĂšrement le pilote privĂ© le plus performant du rallye, a passĂ© sans encombre les tests du jour. AprĂšs son premier abandon en quatre participations Ă cause dâune clavicule fracturĂ©e lâan dernier, lâancien vainqueur de la coupe du monde de rallye raid sâest fixĂ© un objectif ambitieux : « Jâai beaucoup travaillĂ© cette annĂ©e, jâai fait du motocross, de lâenduro et pas mal de foncier. Je me sens trĂšs bien, mĂȘme mieux que lâan passĂ© avant ma chute. JâespĂšre rentrer dans les cinq premiers. »
Sur quatre roues, ce nâest pas un rĂ©el prĂ©tendant Ă la victoire mais un illustre ancien vainqueur qui a attirĂ© lâattention des spectateurs lisboĂštes, des journalistes prĂ©sents Ă Belem et de nombreux concurrents, eux-aussi admirateurs de « LâAfricain ». AprĂšs avoir quittĂ© la direction du rallye en 2003, Hubert Auriol, le triple vainqueur revient avec des ambitions limitĂ©es, le team Isuzu nâayant pour lâheure pas les moyens de rivaliser avec les grosses Ă©curies en prĂ©sence : « Je suis content dâĂȘtre lĂ , dĂ©contractĂ©, je nâai pas de pression particuliĂšre (...) Foutre mon c.. dans une bagnole, ça me va plutĂŽt bien ! Mais quand on sâengage sur le Dakar, on ne vient pas seulement pour se promener ».
Au rayon des anciens vainqueurs, Kenjiro Shinozuka a lui aussi fait le point sur ses ambitions : « Je compte bien rester le plus performant possible, surtout quâil sâagit de mon dernier Dakar en course ». Le vainqueur 1997 transforme en quelque sorte son adieu aux pistes en passage de relais avec les gĂ©nĂ©rations futures, puisquâil a Ă©tĂ© le prĂ©sident du jury de lâopĂ©ration « Dakar Challenge ». Ouverte aux jeunes Ă©quipages du monde entier, la sĂ©lection a dĂ©signĂ© la paire suĂ©doise Johansson â Holmstradn comme la plus mĂ©ritante : « Je fais de la compĂ©tition automobile depuis que jâai huit ans et jâavais deux rĂȘves dans ma vie : participer un jour Ă la Pike Peaks Race et faire le Dakar. Je nâai pas encore rĂ©alisĂ© le premier, mais ĂȘtre au dĂ©part du Dakar aujourdâhui, câest Ă©norme », savourait dĂ©jĂ Thomas Johansson.
Dans la journĂ©e de jeudi, le tenant du titre Ă moto, Cyril Despres, prĂ©sentera Ă la fois sa nouvelle monture et son nouveau coĂ©quipier de tĂȘte, Isidre Esteve Pujol, transfuge de KTM â Repsol. En voiture, câest la derniĂšre version du Race Touareg, conçue pour concurrencer les « Mitsu », qui attirera tous les regards. Surtout quâen plus de Bruno Saby et Jutta Kleinschmidt, le constructeur allemand a recrutĂ© une star du volant qui fera cette annĂ©e ses premiers tours de roues sur le Dakar : Carlos Sainz.

4:00 â At last, AfricaâŠ
The Ciudad de Valencia eventually made it to Nador on the Moroccan coast. The bikers left the ship heading for a waiting zone before being called one after the other in the starting order of the dayâs stage. Ruben Faria, the Portuguese hero of the first two days suffers his first African upset, losing his credit card. The precious item was eventually found by someone else and brought back to its owner.
23:00 â Verhoef, last to go to sleep
Former biker Eric Verhoef who is competing on four wheels for the first time as the co-driver of Freddy Loix seems to be very careful at his new functions. He is indeed the last man to carry on working in the main room of the ship, while all the others are enjoying a last comfortable night.
20:30 â Different ways to prepare
The main leaders of the car race entered their cabins for a well deserved rest. Meanwhile, their co-drivers carried on working on the road-books which will this year be the only source of information. All the methods are equally valuable. Yasushi Yamata, co-driver for Japanâs Asaga decided to isolate in the lower decks of the ship with a head-phone, others work in teams like the three co-drivers of the Schlesser buggies or Jean Marie Lurquin with his girl-friend Antonia de Roissard, both co-drivers for Carlos Sousa and Stephane Henrard.
19:55 â Closed doors⊠again !
This time, the boat could start crossing over to Africa with 229 bikers and 39 cars. Other than Palik, biker Guy Moinon, quad rider Robert Greff and side-car driver Jean-Claude Morsillo were also missing on a boat that was supposed to gather all the competitors of the bike race. In the main room, the TV screens showed footage of the dayâs special. The car winner Carlos Sainz took time to discuss about it with Simon Jean-Joseph, his former WRC team mate in the Ford team.
19:50 â Open Sesame
Marcel Van Drunen is late but the almost closed door is re-opened to let the biker in. The explanation of the Dutchman is simple : âI broke an electrical box during the special and it took me some 4 hours to repair after the finish. I wasnât even able to say goodbye to my father who specially came from the Netherlands to boost me one last timeâ.
19:45 â Closed doors
Time had come to close the huge back doors of the boat with 39 of the 40 cars expected having boarded. Hungarian Laszlo Palik was indeed the only latecomer while four bikers were missing.
19:00 â At work
The competitors gathered in the main living-room of the boat and all started studying their road-books for the first African stage. Stephane Peterhansel was seen discussing with team mate Nani Roma and Carlos Sainz, eager to discover Africa and see what he can manage in his Volkswagen race Touareg II on Moroccan soil.
18:30 â The Gordon show
Robby Gordon made sure he was noticed when making it to the harbour, allowing everyone to listen to the GM engine of his big Hummer. After speeding through the crowd and shaking a great deal of hands, the American boarded the Ciudad de Valencia.
18:00 â Thousands of fans in Malaga
A crowd of close to 25 000 people were waiting around the Malaga harbour to see the boarding of the Dakar âcaravanâ heading by ferry to Africa and the Moroccan coast. The first of the three boats, the âCiudad de Valenciaâ already welcomed half the bikers in the event. One after the other, after a 400km liaison, the competitors were cheered on by the many fans. Frank Periguaud, currently last of the overall bike standing seemed impressed by the size of the crowd. âItâs really amazing, we almost canât go through because of the number of people. They move away at the last minute.â
Stage 3 : Nador â Er Rachidia
In these conditions, things should be rather difficult for yesterdayâs winner Ruben Faria who will be discovering Africa for his first rally-raid. This first African special should give first answers concerning Carlos Sainz who wonât be as comfortable as in the WRC type first specials in Europe. The Spaniard will certainly be counting on the experience of his co-driver Andreas Schultz, a former winner of the race with Hiroshi Masuoka.
