A first attempt, a fine attempt. In 2007 Latvia’s Einars Vinters offered himself the luxury of a first Dakar in the marathon class with no assistance that not only did he finish but he put in an excellent 14th overall result. Of course Einars has a lot of experience on a bike having competed in several Latvian and Baltic Championships in enduro and motocross, but his first Dakar result demands respect. Especially because the Latvian got involved in the sport in a rather unfamiliar way: "I started in order to stop smoking!" That was nine years ago and here he is now able to prepare his own machine for the Dakar.
Einars Vinters made the most of the help from his brother Janis - a renowned rider in his own right back in Latvia - during his learning period. The two are very close and Janis’ last minute cancellation last year, due to injury, affected Einars profoundly, the siblings are used to helping one another in the race. Einars will begin the rally with the objective of doing at least as well as he did on his first Dakar (14th) and why not the top 10, where his brother was a regular fixture at one time.
