Antonio Alpañez Serrano: “To race the Dakar on a bike is the utmost Dakar experience”
Antonio Alpañez is passionate about the world and foreign countries. He has travelled to so many different places that he has a hard time deciding what type of landscape or situation are the most fascinating. “I have been in places as contradictory as Vietnam and Mali. I have also been to the Poles. This enhances one’s capacity to adapt and, besides the race, these experiences are going to help me”. He used to watch the Dakar on TV and he was convinced that one day he would also be there. In his case, the power of television and the irresistible attraction of the Dakar joined forces. Last year, he had the opportunity to be a navigator in a colleague’s truck and, from that moment on, he did all he could to come back, but this time alone and on a bike. “Without looking down on any of the categories, the most complicated one is bikes. The reason is simple: on a bike, you are the rider, the mechanic and the navigator! To race the Dakar on a bike is the utmost Dakar experience”. Although he does not have the experience of other acclaimed riders that will be racing with him, he believes that he has the capacity to reach the finish line. Besides, Antonio has an important ace up his sleeve: he is a very good navigator.
