Henno Van Bergeijk is taking a radically different approach for the 2009 Dakar. For his first participation in the rally in 2006, Henno gave him such a little treat in entering with his favourite bike, an old Yamaha XT 500. A pleasure that cost him quite a lot of effort. “It was very hard”, Henno remembers. “The bike was as heavy as a big KTM and very hard to handle.” The Dutchman managed to finish all the same in last place.

This year, the Yamaha XT 500 collector has changed mounts: “I want to do the Dakar in normal and comfortable conditions.” Henno has this time opted for the Austrian bike. “It was a magnificent challenge to do the Dakar with an XT, but once is enough. Here, I will have three-times the power and undoubtedly I will be able to go twice as fast.”

A better bike, but Henno’s ambitions are not necessarily higher. “When you begin something, you have to finish, so I want go all the way. My bike will allow me to ride during the day; in 2006 I finished at night all the time.”

Henno Van Bergeijk knows all about management and risk taking. He started a business specializing in the preparation and furnishing of vehicles for use in commercials and cinema. “For example, I looked after the cars used in Ocean 12.” All this began 15 years ago. Back then, his tendency as a collector brought him luck: a producer was looking for Peugeot 404s to simulate a crash. Perfect timing, Henno Van Bergeijk the collector happened to have two in stock.
