Jean-Louis Schlesser: "I’m interested in first position!"
Two-time winner of the Dakar, first driver to win the event in a two-wheel drive car and five-time winner of the FIA off-road rally World Cup: what pushes Jean-Louis Schlesser to still battle for glory? At 59 years of age, this former circuit driver has won everything in off-road rallies. But since Mitsubishi started dominating the event, Jean-Louis Schlesser is eager to hit back. A real competitor, a man of challenges, the former Formula One driver isn’t the kind to give up. While this self-made constructor obviously doesn’t have the same weapons the official teams have, he still manages to worry the likes of drivers like Peterhansel, Alphand or Sainz.
An untiring attacker, Schlesser lives for panache although it has sometimes given him the reputation of a "car destroyer". For two years now, one has witnessed a slow but strong return of the blue buggies managing to all finish the Dakar, clinching five stage successes and moving back on the podium thanks to Jean-Louis’ third spot in 2007. This year, three Schlesser buggies will once again start in Lisbon. The presence of a real team will give the boss the opportunity to give all he has for victory. "Last year, the fact that I was alone forced me to be more sensible than usual. This time I will take more risks than Dominique Housieaux and Jose-Luis Monterde, because I’m interested in first position. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll always have the possibility to take care of them".
