Yves Fromont: "After my son Jean, I’m starting with my eldest François"
It’s what you call passing on the passion: after taking along his son Jean on two occasions, Yves Fromont will this year be driving alongside his other boy François, 28 years of age, on the Dakar. "He had wanted to come for several years and this time he was able to find time on his professional schedule. It was now or never due to the fact that I won’t be doing 15 000 Dakar rallies..."
While he has no intention to beat an appearance record, lawyer Yves Fromont has however started the race eight times and gathered enough experience to manage young competitors on the Dakar. "Jean was really good at mechanics and in navigation and like François this year he had no experience of off-road races when he took off for the first time. I’m not too worried".
François will make the best of his younger brother’s experience: "We work on his old road books, he gives me the main rules in navigation". On a physical point of view however, he certainly doesn’t have anything to learn: several years playing in a very decent Australian rugby team when he was a student have made him a fairly strong athlete.
If the trial works out this year, François would love to try the experience again but this time on a bike. Like his father, a two-time bike rider on the Dakar in 2000 and 2001 who warns him: "On a bike one has a wider view of the situation but has to be physically and technically prepared with a strong mind and a good team". He who started on a bike with no assistance and had to quit the race with a broken foot knows what he’s talking about...
