Gabriel Nicolae: “Creating the first professional Romanian team”
First Romanian team in the history of the Dakar, the Nicolae-Stanciu pair isn’t new on extreme races. Gabriel and Tudor are two men of ‘’will and passion’’ with one same goal that has made them overcome quite some obstacles. The duo that admits that “the budget was hard to find”, is now counting on “good media coverage of the event in Romania”, to accomplish their real dream: to create the first professional Romanian team”.
That’s for a long term objective. For this first Dakar, the ambition is more measured: “to simply finish”. Already familiar with the terrain after having competed in a humanitarian event from Bucharest to Dakar last year, after which they had delivered cars and school equipment, both men have also lived several extreme adventures. “For two years now we’ve taken part in an unofficial championship organised by the Romanian auto-clubs. The events last two days, three days and sometimes a week in lost parts of the country, sometimes real virgin forests. Repairing the car under the rain in the middle of the night when it’s 0°C, is a hell of a test”, explains Gabriel.
For the Dakar, the only worry remains “the dunes. We don’t have much experience of the sand”, admits Tudor Stanciu. But Gabriel adds: “even in the dunes we know that we’ll manage. We don’t know why but we know that we will make it to the finish”.
