Salvador Avila: “Everything is going to be brand new”

He knows nothing about the Dakar and he claims, without hiding it, his rookie status in the race. Salvador comes to his first Dakar with the excitement of an amateur who has spent all his life among cars and who is finally able to make it to this legendary race. “Everything is going to be brand new to me”, he acknowledges. Salvador has lived in the world of motorsports for the last 22 years. Sundays in a 4x4 or on motorcycle through the mountainous area of Granada, Spain, and his work as a car dealer have paved the way for his being naturally drawn to the Dakar, as well has his friend and co-driver, José Luis Conde Bonaire. “I’m not adventurous by nature, but I do look for new challenges in my personal life”. Four years ago, Salvador Avila began to travel south to the desert in Morocco and he was quickly hooked. The Dakar was just the next logical step: “We have already seen it on television, but we have no idea on how it is from the inside”, he explains and highlights that they are the first team from Granada that has taken up this adventure. “We will be thrilled if we are able to finish. We know we are new in this, but our idea is to come back a few times”. José Luis Conde, the co-driver, has already been living this adventure for a few months. “For me racing in the Dakar is like a dream come true”. Being a friend of Dakar racers such as Eduardo Campoy López or Carlos Rentero, José Luis bears in mind the lessons learned by David Seryes, responsible of Logistics for Mitsubishi, in 2005 in Granada: “I lent them a hand and I realised that they don’t miss a thing. They have everything under control. They are light years ahead of any other team”. A good example to follow for a rookie.
