“I could write a book about all the Dakars I’ve taken part in. But for now it’s greying my hair and aging my face”. With 20 Dakars to his credit, Christian Lambert has fun with his longevity in the hardest race on the planet and is back with more enthusiasm than ever for a new edition. New like when he took part in his first Dakar back in 1986 when his job was rapid assistance for Philippe Delachapelle. “I rent my trucks to André Dessoude and we take care of the assistance. On this Dakar there are 4 cars of his team, none are attributed but with the Kerax I will have to do well and be able to help out Christian Lavieille’s prototype that works well”. Christian Lambert was one of the first members of the Mitsubishi team, for which he did rapid assistance for Jean-Pierre Fontenay, Bruno Saby and Hiroshi Masuoka. “Hiroshi is a good friend, for whom I did several complete rally raid seasons”, remembers Christian, who in 2001 opened his own assistance company for privateers. Tempted by racing for himself in the truck division, he never managed to do so due to a lack of sponsors. “Sometimes assistance can become frustrating, we battle for a couple of places and then we have to come to help out a car!” But things have changed. “I did my first rally with my son Julien, the Transafricaine in a 1536 Mercedes. I think he caught the virus. I’m considering doing the real race with him and my wife. It would be great on a Dakar”. But before that, he greedily takes on the tracks of Argentina and Chile: “I will be lucky enough, because I indeed did the Transorientale this year, to witness the three continents racing”. Another chapter for his book.
