Dominique Brié: “I wanted to change my life”
Two years ago, “the World fell apart” for Dominique Brié. It was his first Dakar. After only four stages and a series of technical upsets, the pharmacist from Valenciennes had to quit the race close to Ouarzazate. “So much investment for that result… For two years I had been thinking Dakar, eating Dakar. The disappointment was huge”. Dominique Brié is a specimen of his own. The man had started off-road biking a year and a half before with the only objective to take on the African odyssey. “All I did was work. I wanted to try and change my life a little. I needed a strong goal”. So came the “intensive” preparation, several bike training camps as well as two appearances on the 2005 and 2006 Shamrock rallies.
Today, Dominique Brié is back on the start line, motivated as ever. The 2007 disappointment was forgotten a long time ago. “As soon as I boarded the plane back home, I thought about coming back. I had done mistakes; I had let the trucks overtake me. I could have done better”. The new address of the Dakar revealed to be a source of extra motivation. “It looks extraordinary. I’m not a big traveller and maybe I would never have been to South America. It’s good to discover new terrain: We’re kind of following the footsteps of Thierry Sabine”.
