José Sanchez Tapia: “I hope I’ll be at the level”
For two years now, José has been focusing, quietly, on his preparation to take part in the Dakar. Spanish amateur rally champion in the 450cc class in 2007, 17th of the last Baja Aragon and 24th of the Portuguese Dakar Series, José’s references aren’t numerous but solid enough. Busy due to his work in the family company that deals with extracting and treating marble, José has been running after possibilities to train: “I work five days a week and all I have left is the weekend’’. In such a context, the tips of his friend and neighbour Antonio Ramos are precious. The driver from Murcia has competed in 11 Dakar races and helped prepare José’s bike. Logically, José will be taking off without a real ambition: “I just want to finish and then come back to my little girl Ana who is one year old”. This 33-year-old rookie also competes for his village, Macael, 5000 inhabitants, and the City Hall that helped him find one of his major sponsors. Nourished with the images of the Dakar that went through or took off from Spain, José knows that it’ll be tricky and admits that the speed of the various vehicles has always impressed him. He’ll be taking on the challenge on a KTM 525, chosen for its reliability. But that doesn’t take away his uncertainties: “I haven’t yet competed in a rally with such long stages: I hope I will be at the level”.
