Paul Green: « I slept for a week after my first finish”
For Paul Green and Mark Eland, the Dakar is a little bit like a series of missed appointments. The Englishman and Australian, who were to team up in 2008, thought they’d do the same in 2009. Unfortunately, Mark’s car didn’t arrive in time for the Australasian Safari. He decided to do it on a motorcycle and was victim of a serious accident. “He was in a coma for five weeks and he still has some problems,” Paul Green says. “I’ll be thinking about him on the Dakar and I’ll be taking a lot of photos for him.”
And thus, Paul will team with Matthew Harrison, who he met five years ago, but with whom he has little experience with in the cockpit. This doesn’t worry the “wily veteran” who has one finish and two retirements on his Dakar CV. Paul and Matthew’s goal is to finish the rally. “It would be like a victory for us”, believes Paul who admits he caught “the virus” the first time he witnessed the rally…Matthew could also catch the bug on his first Dakar that he is approaching as a veritable “challenge”.
“The real difficulties on this rally are to get through the technical problems and then hold up mentally,” Paul decrees. “Physically, its okay, I have no problem to drive 15 hours a day. When I finished in 2005, I remember however that the day after the rally, my adrenaline dropped, my body gave out and I slept for an entire week.”
