Albertus Olde-Scheper: “Nobody competes in this car”

Call them ‘Abi’ and ‘Rob’. That’s how this friendly crew, mad for 4X4 cars, call each other: Albertus Olde-Scheper and Robertus Van Laarhoven. It was around the world of four-wheel drive cars that their relation started: “When I turned 18, says Albertus, I bought the old 4X4 of my mother. I immediately brought it to the garage to have it repaired. It was the garage of Robertus’’. The starting point of an over twenty-year long friendship that was highlighted thanks to the Dakar. First in 2004, then in 2005 – Robertus was then in the assistance crew of Albertus who had to quit twice due to technical problems. And finally this year, side by side in their Jeep Wrangler. “An unusual car”, according to Albertus the Dutch giant (1,99 m): “Nobody competes in this car. It isn’t adapted to the Dakar”. So why take off on a Dakar in a car that isn’t made for it? “We actually have a three year project”, explains the driver, boss of a mineral water brand. “This year will be a test year. The idea is to be competitive in three years. But of course we would like to reach Buenos Aires”. The crew doesn’t really know what to expect from South America. “The specials should be long and I like that”, says Albertus. “I hope that the race will be competed on several different terrains because the car is rather versatile”.
